Syria after Bashar al-Assad

Ahmed al-Sharaat is officially elected interim president of Syria. Several announcements have been made from Damascus as the de facto leadership aims to retain power and rebuild Syria.

Ahmed al-Sharaa: the Syrian interim leader

Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as pro-al-Qaeda insurgent leader Abu Mohamed al-Jolani. Sharaa currently holds the presidency of the Syrian Republic and represents Syria in international forums (with powers delegated for a transitional period.)

The fall of the Baath Party and the new political direction

The National Progressive Front, a group belonging to the Baath Party, was banned, their assets confiscated and transferred to the state. In Syria, the current leadership has decided that no party sympathetic to Assad's rule can be re-established.

Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa told Saudi broadcaster Al-Arabiya that it could take up to four years before Syrians can elect their own president. Sharaa's main priority is to enforce law and order and rewrite the Syrian constitution after the long Assad rule.
